Mittlerweile sind wir 8 Leute (und zum 3. mal negativ getestet:) und neben Zuckerbäckerei, um den Alltag ein wenig zu versüßen haben wir auch angefangen, die knapp 2000 Portionen der Allesandropou Küche ab und an mit unserem großen Topf und dem Brenner um knapp 100 Mahlzeiten von unserer Wohnung aus zu erweitern…
Ausserdem füllen wir Verteilschichten, bei der Khora Küche. Das ist eine Art Lieferservice für die Leute im erweiterten Viertel, die sich ihr Essen nicht abholen können. Wir haben diverse leckere Gerichte in der Khora Küche mitgekocht, was je nach Chefkoch*ender ganz unterschiedliche kulinarische und soziale Erlebnisse waren und ab kommenden Montag ergänzen wir in einer eigenen Nachmittags Koch Session die 600 Portionen der Khora Küche mit nochmal 150 Portionen um dem Bedarf vor Ort gerechter zu werden und die Kochenden von Khora zu entlasten. Wegen der neuen Lockdown Verschärfungen musste der Umsonstladen leider schließen.

Ankaa
Gestern haben wir auch das beeindruckende Ankaa Projekt in der Nähe des Eleona Camps besucht. Dort wird aktuell die neue mobile Bibliothek des http://echo-greece.org/ ausgebaut. Normalerweise (wenn es keine Coronabeschränkungen gibt) finden dort u.A. sechs wöchige Werkstattlehrgänge in verschiedensten Gewerken (Holz, Fahrrad, Nähen, Computer, Metall, Schmuck) statt. Diese richten sich vor allem an die Menschen im nahegelegenen Camp, sind aber auch offen für alle Anderen.
Außerdem gibt es mittlerweile vier Angestellte. Diese konnten auch während des Lockdowns weiter beschäftigt bleiben. Sie arbeiten im Näherei Bereich des Projektes, wo Produkte wie aktuell Corona Masken oder die aus Schlauchboot Resten hergestellten Produkte von Mimycri produziert werden. Unsere handwerklichen Fähigkeiten bringen wir heute beim Bibliotheksbusausbau ein und auch das Aufnahmestudio des Khora Soundlabs, wartet sehnlichst auf eine Schalldämmung.
Wie schon im letzten Update erwähnt, ist es umwerfend, wie viele Projekte seit dem Sommer der Hoffnung 2015 und der Grenzschließungen im Frühjahr 2016 entstanden sind. Sie werden unter anderem in unserem in Mache befindlichen Podcast im Fokus stehen und sind inspirierende Beispiele eines auf Solidarität und Kooperation basierenden globalen Handelns.

Schnee in Athen
Was seit dem letzten Update noch passiert ist, ist ein kurzer heftiger Wintereinbruch mit ordentlich Schnee, der u.A. das nördlich von Athen gelegene Geflüchteten Camp Malakassa für 24h von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten hat. Besonders dramatisch war, dass die heftigen Schneemassen die Stromversorgung des Camps lahmgelegt haben und dadurch auch kein Wasser lief. Über verschiedene Kanäle kamen Hilferufe der Bewohner*innen nach Athen. Wir sind dann, nachdem wir unser Auto wieder freigeschaufelt haben, mit einer Ladung voll Wasser dort hin gefahren. Vor Ort haben wir mit der Küche Foodkind Wasser und Essen verteilen können.
IOM die Internationale Organisation für Migration der europäischen Union, die das Camp betreibt haben die Menschen im Camp hingegen mit folgender Nachricht schockiert.: “Dear residents,
Due to bad weather and highway closures, none of the organizations can access the camp today. IOM team will be present at the site when the conditions will allow it. Please stay inside and safe!
Thank you“. Die ca. 3000 BewohnerInnen die im deutlich überfüllten Camp leben, wurden so letzten Dienstag und Mittwoch ohne Strom, Wasser und Essensversorgung alleingelassen. Zum Glück kam unseres Wissens durch diese Verantwortungslosigkeit niemand im Malakassa Camp ums Leben. Tod durch Erfrieren ist allerdings in den griechischen Lagern in den letzten Jahre leider keine Seltenheit.

Side Facts zur Allgemeinen Situation in Griechenland
Letzte Woche wurde ein Gesetz verabschiedet, das die Stationierung von Polizei an den Griechischen Universitäten vorsieht.
Das ist im Kontext der griechischen Geschichte besonders brisant. Seit der griechischen Militärdiktatur in den 1970ern gab es ein UniversitätsAsyl, dass zwar auch schon 2019 von der Neuen Regierung abgeschafft wurde, was aber defakto noch bewirkt hat, dass Polizei wirklich nur im Falle schwerer Straftaten Zugang zu den Uni Campussen hatte. Jetzt soll die Polizei mit Wachen auf den Universitätsgeländen sein, was am letzten Donnerstag mit knapper Mehrheit im Parlament abgestimmt wurde. Letze Woche gab es deshalb, trotz Coronabedingtem Versammlungsverbot Große Landesweite Demos, die z.T. brutal von der Polizei angegriffen wurde. Auch heute wird es wieder Demos deswegen geben… die Stimmung in Athen ist angespannt. Mitsutakis und seiner Regierung wird der Vorwurf gemacht die Corona Maßnahmen zu nutzen um unbeliebte und Freiheitseinschränkende Maßnahmen zu manifestieren. Im Griechischen Haushaltsplan 2021 ist eine Erhöhung der Verteidigungsausgaben um etwa 30 Prozent auf 5,4 Milliarden Euro und eine Kürzung der Gesundheitsausgaben um 572 Millionen Euro vorgesehen. Schon letztes Jahr gab es hier die 2. höchste Polizist*innen pro Kopf Dichte in der EU und die wenigsten Krankenpfleger*innen.¹

Meanwhile we are 8 people (and for the 3rd time tested negative:) and besides baking cakes and cookies to sweeten the everyday life a little we have also started to expand the almost 2000 servings of the Allesandropou kitchen from time to time with our big pot and the burner by almost 100 meals from our apartment….
We fill distribution shifts, at Khora Kitchen. This is a kind of delivery service for the people in the extended neighborhood who can’t pick up their food. We have cooked several delicious meals at the Khora Kitchen, which were very different culinary and social experiences depending on the chefs. Starting next Monday, we will add another 150 servings to the 600 servings of the Khora Kitchen in a separate afternoon cooking session to meet the local demand and to relieve the cooks of Khora. Due to the new lockdown tightening, the freeshop unfortunately had to close.
Ankaa
Yesterday we also visited the impressive Ankaa project near Eleona Camp. There, the new mobile library of the Echo Association is currently being expanded. Normally (when there are no corona restrictions) six-week workshop courses in various trades (wood, bicycle, sewing, computer, metal, jewelry) take place there. These are mainly aimed at the people in the nearby camp, but are also open to all others.
In addition, there are now four employees. They were able to stay employed during the lockdown. They work in the sewing area of the project, where products like currently Corona masks or the products of Mimycri, which are made out of leftover rubber dinghies, are produced. Today we are using our handicraft skills in the library bus extension and also the recording studio of the Khora Soundlab, is eagerly waiting for sound insulation.
As mentioned in the last update, it’s mind-blowing how many projects have been created since the Summer of Hope in 2015 and the border closures in Spring 2016. They will be the focus of our podcast in the making, among others, and are inspiring examples of global action based on solidarity and cooperation.
Snow in Athens
What else happened since the last update is a short heavy winter onset with decent snow, which among other things cut off the refugee camp Malakassa, located north of Athens, from the outside world for 24h. Particularly dramatic was that the heavy snow masses have paralyzed the power supply of the camp and thus no water ran. Calls for help from the residents came through various channels to Athens. After we had shoveled our car free again, we drove there with a load of water. On the spot we were able to distribute water and food with the kitchen Foodkind.
IOM, the International Organization for Migration of the European Union, which runs the camp, shocked the people in the camp with the following message: „Dear residents,
Due to bad weather and highway closures, none of the organizations can access the camp today. IOM team will be present at the site when the conditions will allow it. Please stay inside and safe!
Thank you“. The approximately 3000 residents living in the overcrowded camp were left without electricity, water and food last Tuesday and Wednesday. Fortunately, to our knowledge, no one died in the Malakassa camp as a result of this irresponsibility. However, death by freezing is not uncommon in the Greek camps in recent years.
Side Facts on the General Situation in Greece
Last week, a law was passed that provides for the stationing of police at Greek universities.
This is particularly explosive in the context of Greek history. Since the Greek military dictatorship in the 1970s, there was a university asylum, which was abolished by the new government in 2019, but which defacto still had the effect that police really only had access to the university campuses in the case of serious crimes. Now the police should be with guards on the university campuses, which was voted last Thursday with a narrow majority in Parliament.
