5. und vorerst letztes Athen Update

english version belowUnsere 6 Wochen in Athen sind nun leider vorbei und unsere Eindrücke vielfältig.
Wo schlafen all diese Menschen? Haben Sie genug zum Anziehen und Zudecken? Windeln, Seife, Spielzeug?

„You cannot speak about feminism if we are not included. The system will not fall if the borders do not fall. Because sisterhood is the way. Smash the patriarchy, smash the borders!“
https://www.transnational-strike.info/2021/03/05/you-cannot-speak-about-feminism-if-we-are-not-included-8th-march-the-tmc-speaks-from-moria/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuEOdSaQw_c
https://de.crimethinc.com/2019/11/23/neue-demokratie-das-neue-gesicht-der-staatlichen-gewalt-in-griechenland-ein-ausblick-aus-exarchia-im-angesicht-des-sich-anbahnenden-showdowns

in english

Our 6 weeks in Athens are now unfortunately over and our impressions varied. We encountered a lot of solidarity and saw the realities that make this solidarity fundamentally important. What became very clear to us is that people in precarious living conditions are hit particularly hard by crises and that Corona is no exception. After the Greek welfare state was successfully cut together, the effects are particularly felt in the pandemic. We were overwhelmed by the number of residents of
Athens are dependent on civil society help. We learned of at least 8 active soup kitchens in Athens, each distributing 100-2000 portions of food to the hungry. In the kitchens we worked in, we often saw people being turned away because there was no food left, and the impression that there was always too little was strong. Where do all these people sleep? Do you have enough to dress and cover them? Diapers, soap, toys? Do you have access to medical care? Do you have papers, or on top of all that, do they always have to be on guard against uncomprehending bureaucrats and thugs of the EU regime?
The lockdown in Attica has only worsened all the already disastrous conditions. For people without income or basic state services, it is a matter of survival.

But the comrades in Athens have also shown us once again how important it is to link the struggles against fascism and for the right to migration and how important the exchange and solidarity with those affected is. The Greek left is leading us by example and has managed in many places to think along with people on the move and to ally with them. The creation of housing and the low-threshold structure of solikitchen are central elements of a common struggle. Even if the state
makes a self-determined life impossible for many people, spaces can still be created in which all
can be created in which all people can actively shape their lives and meet at eye level. Experiencing these truly diverse associations in Athens did a lot of good. Here in Germany, too, people on the move sometimes have to endure the most adverse conditions or are deprived of their most basic rights in deportation prisons. We have to overcome our blockades and reach out to people, because we cannot be free as long as not everyone is free!
The 8th of March in Greece has expressed with purple and colorful force that oppression has many patriarchal faces, which we can only overcome together:
„You cannot speak about feminism if we are not included. The system will not fall if the borders do not fall. Because sisterhood is the way. Smash the patriarchy, smash the borders!“
Quote from the very readable text of the Woman in Solidarity House Lesvos WISH

You Cannot Speak about Feminism if We are not Included. 8th March: the TMC Speaks from Moria

In Athens, a large, loud demo took place on this occasion, which also included a large „multinational bloc“ called for by Solidarity with Migrants, among others, and which was joined by many refugees. In the Ritsona camp north of Athens, the residents are currently protesting for the release of their papers.

Unfortunately, not a day goes by in which Fortress Europe does not claim new victims.
The Eu-Turkey deal, which led to the disastrous conditions for refugees on the Greek islands, came into force 5 years ago.
One year after the fascist forces of Europe gathered at the Turkish-Greek border crossing at the river Evros and indiscriminately attacked refugees and journalists, leaving at least 2 dead, today (20.3) a big anti-racist demonstration is taking place in Athens. It is only our solidarity and community resistance that can change these conditions.
Against the fascist government of Mitsotakis and the „Neo Demokratia“ this resistance is also gaining strength. The demonstrations have become larger and more powerful in recent weeks, combining several themes.
In addition to solidarity with hunger-striking prisoner Dimitris Koufontinas, who ended his strike on March 14, after more than 2 months with this statement* and student protests against the introduction of police guards on campuses, a case of arbitrary police violence has been the straw that broke the camel’s back. 10,000s of people turned out on the streets of Athens and Thessaloniki despite the lockdown and strict curfew, and violent
clashes broke out. The anger of those affected by more and more repression broke out. We can only guess how profound and painful the cuts and developments are. After talking to local activists, we can see how negatively the new government has changed everything in just one and a half years. We would like to recommend the film „Le Amour et la Revolution“ to you.

The film is from 2018 and shows local anarchist structures, their solidarity projects and struggles. This film was finished before ND came to power and thus shows how it was 3 years ago. Many of the projects mentioned in it were evicted at the end of 2019. It is worth looking at the reading of the „actual state“ afterwards, for example told here by a comrade:
https://de.crimethinc.com/2019/11/23/neue-demokratie-das-neue-gesicht-der-staatlichen-gewalt-in-griechenland-ein-ausblick-aus-exarchia-im-angesicht-des-sich-anbahnenden-showdowns
All this fits in, in a neoliberal policy of the oligarchs, which constantly increases the hardship of the little people with more and more savings, while at the same time stylizing itself as Europe’s flagship of border security by massively arming the police and border guards and trying to keep its own population in check.

Unfortunately, we can only do a little against this huge overall shit. But even a little is better than nothing…

To come back to our last days in Athens we have extended the announced welding workshop over the weekend. It has proved to be both professional welders, who do not have access to their profession in Athens yet, and complete beginners. The result is also impressive.

We also kept our pot bubbling and distributed about 120 servings of food almost daily in Victoria Square. We also baked another 1000 cookies and supported local solo structures wherever possible. Team Leipzig also finished packing the 2nd load of pallets with donations in kind, which are now on their way to the Khora Freeshop. We will send more pallets to Greece as soon as possible
Greece, next time probably to Thessaloniki to the group „Stop War on Migrants“.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support! DAAAANKE!!!!
Thank you for everything, for donating, for reading and silently supporting.

Corona did not make things easier, but it was important for us to try to show solidarity even during the pandemic. Because the border regime unfortunately does not take a break. People are still drowning in the Mediterranean, there are still brutal pushbacks, thousands are still imprisoned under catastrophic conditions and deprived of their most basic rights…

Please continue to inform yourselves about the conditions in Europe and at the borders, be loud and become active!
It is the world and future of all of us. And as long as not all are free, nobody is free!
Greetings your Rollingcinemas

4. Athen Update

english version below

Bild von solidarity with migrants

Bild von Solidarity with Migrants

Bild von solidarity with migrants

https://medium.com/are-you-syrious/ays-weekend-digest-27-28-2-2021-people-left-on-the-streets-as-filoxenia-shuts-down-48ee8747308

We have been in Athens for over a month now and after having problems in the beginning to get involved in the existing solidarity structures in the best possible way, we suddenly are very busy.

In the last week, hundreds of refugees arrived in the streets of Athens, without anyaccess to basic services. A government accommodation program „Filoxenia“, which has housed some 7000 most vulnerable people from the Greek islands, in hotels on the mainland over the last 15 months, was stopped without any further solutions as of March 1.

The Victoria Square, a central square in Athens, became again the last refuge for again stranded People on the Move, thereby majority families with children. That’s why our new pot is bubbling even more often now and since Sunday we have been there several times a day with food, tea and brownies. Khora also cooked extra portions 2 times this week that we were able to distribute on the square, but overall there is a lack of perspective. The police clear the square and scatter the people, who come back after all for lack of alternative. According to „Are You Syrious“, lists of names of the people evicted from the hotels were distributed to the camp operators so that they would deny them access to the camp structures.

camp structures. There have been protests by refugees in front of the hotels and in the camps in recent days. Most of the evicted people are recognized refugees in Greece, but they are waiting for their papers and also fall out of the care structures of the „emergency care“ in the camps because of the recognized asylum status. They are caught in a bureaucratic and humanitarian trap. In the squares of Athens, they are also at the mercy of mafia and other criminal structures that exploit their plight.

https://medium.com/are-you-syrious/ays-weekend-digest-27-28-2-2021-people-left-on-the-streets-as-filoxenia-shuts-down-48ee8747308

We also distributed food in the port of Piraeus, where hundreds of homeless people spend the night, only to realize once again how many people here are forced into catastrophic living conditions. Despite the enormous solidarity of local SoliKüchen, it seems almost impossible to provide all the needy on the streets of Athens with enough food.

We also took a large load of clothing and hygiene items to a camp outside Athens. Through personal contacts we knew about the urgent needs of the residents and were able to help. Next weekend the announced welding workshop will finally take place at Khora. Material and tools have been procured and then we can sizzle away on Saturday and Sunday with 2 – 3 small groups.

Since last Saturday, every day there are larger and more powerful demonstrations in solidarity with the hunger striker Dimitris Koufontinas. About 5000 people were on the streets of Athens last night. Next Saturday, 6.3. a new international day of action in solidarity with Dimitris Koufontinas

is called. more info can be found here:

*And what else happened this week:* the investigations against our friends from the sea rescue, the crew of the Juventa are now officially declared closed. After more than 3 years of waiting and waiting and during which the ship Juventa, perfectly equipped for sea rescue, lay on the chain, the trial is now opened with the same baseless accusations. Our friends are charged with human smuggling and aiding and abetting illegal migration, for having rescued over 14,000 people from distress in the Mediterranean Sea between 2016 and 2017. They face up to 20 years in prison.

3. Athen Update

—————
english version below
—————

VioMe hatte by the way letzte Woche sein 8 Jähriges Jubiläum.

With the 4th negative Corona test we start into the 3rd update from Athens.

The political events are overturning and there is almost every day at least the attempt of a demo in solidarity with the hunger striker Dimitris Koufontinas. Koufontinas has been on hunger strike since January 8 and since this week he has been on thirst strike since February 23 he is being force-fed, which is torture according to the Geneva Convention. Furthermore, it was only after massive public pressure that the director of the National Theater was arrested on February 20 on multiple charges of rape, pedophilia, and child abuse.¹ Add to this the student protests, which again today had several thousand people on the streets, and the anti-Corona measures, and the overall situation is explosive.

In between, we groove, with our crew now down to seven people here, between our various projects and todos. Delivery at Khora, cooking for Khora, cooking with Khora, packing at Aollosandropos, bringing vegetables to the cooking soccer club, baking and distributing brownies and the various spontaneous construction projects. New additions in the last week have been our new large stainless steel pot and a bit of warehouse logistics at Khora’s for free store, which unfortunately is still closed due to the tightened lockdown. Still, lots of goods are being moved there and waiting for distribution. What has gone unmentioned so far is our now second pallet that we send here from Leipzig. With the first one came shoes and clothes and a few hygiene items and toys. The 2nd pallet is now almost filled and will be shipped in the next few days. Especially milk powder which is available here only at horrendous prices, as well as shoes and clothes and things for babies.

If anyone here knows good sources for milk powder and diapers, we are happy about hints and donations. Today we also picked up the VioMe soap that arrived at their Athens warehouse and brought it to the free store to be distributed as soon as the store opens again. VioMe by the way had its 8th anniversary last week. Probably the quietest since the occupation of the factory.

If it goes well we will also give a small welding workshop at Khora next week to replace the wire mesh that protects the Khora exterior with something sturdier.

2. Athen Update

———
english version below
———

Schnee in Athen
Due to bad weather and highway closures, none of the organizations can access the camp today. IOM team will be present at the site when the conditions will allow it. Please stay inside and safe!
Thank you“.

Meanwhile we are 8 people (and for the 3rd time tested negative:) and besides baking cakes and cookies to sweeten the everyday life a little we have also started to expand the almost 2000 servings of the Allesandropou kitchen from time to time with our big pot and the burner by almost 100 meals from our apartment….
We fill distribution shifts, at Khora Kitchen. This is a kind of delivery service for the people in the extended neighborhood who can’t pick up their food. We have cooked several delicious meals at the Khora Kitchen, which were very different culinary and social experiences depending on the chefs. Starting next Monday, we will add another 150 servings to the 600 servings of the Khora Kitchen in a separate afternoon cooking session to meet the local demand and to relieve the cooks of Khora. Due to the new lockdown tightening, the freeshop unfortunately had to close.
Ankaa
Yesterday we also visited the impressive Ankaa project near Eleona Camp. There, the new mobile library of the Echo Association is currently being expanded. Normally (when there are no corona restrictions) six-week workshop courses in various trades (wood, bicycle, sewing, computer, metal, jewelry) take place there. These are mainly aimed at the people in the nearby camp, but are also open to all others.
In addition, there are now four employees. They were able to stay employed during the lockdown. They work in the sewing area of the project, where products like currently Corona masks or the products of Mimycri, which are made out of leftover rubber dinghies, are produced. Today we are using our handicraft skills in the library bus extension and also the recording studio of the Khora Soundlab, is eagerly waiting for sound insulation.
As mentioned in the last update, it’s mind-blowing how many projects have been created since the Summer of Hope in 2015 and the border closures in Spring 2016. They will be the focus of our podcast in the making, among others, and are inspiring examples of global action based on solidarity and cooperation.
Snow in Athens
What else happened since the last update is a short heavy winter onset with decent snow, which among other things cut off the refugee camp Malakassa, located north of Athens, from the outside world for 24h. Particularly dramatic was that the heavy snow masses have paralyzed the power supply of the camp and thus no water ran. Calls for help from the residents came through various channels to Athens. After we had shoveled our car free again, we drove there with a load of water. On the spot we were able to distribute water and food with the kitchen Foodkind.
IOM, the International Organization for Migration of the European Union, which runs the camp, shocked the people in the camp with the following message: „Dear residents,
Due to bad weather and highway closures, none of the organizations can access the camp today. IOM team will be present at the site when the conditions will allow it. Please stay inside and safe!
Thank you“. The approximately 3000 residents living in the overcrowded camp were left without electricity, water and food last Tuesday and Wednesday. Fortunately, to our knowledge, no one died in the Malakassa camp as a result of this irresponsibility. However, death by freezing is not uncommon in the Greek camps in recent years.
Side Facts on the General Situation in Greece
Last week, a law was passed that provides for the stationing of police at Greek universities.
This is particularly explosive in the context of Greek history. Since the Greek military dictatorship in the 1970s, there was a university asylum, which was abolished by the new government in 2019, but which defacto still had the effect that police really only had access to the university campuses in the case of serious crimes. Now the police should be with guards on the university campuses, which was voted last Thursday with a narrow majority in Parliament. Last week there were therefore, despite Corona related ban on gatherings Large nationwide demos, which was partly brutally attacked by the police. Today there will be demos again… the mood in Athens is tense. Mitsutakis and his government are accused of using the Corona measures to manifest unpopular and freedom-restricting measures. The Greek budget for 2021 includes an increase in defense spending of about 30 percent to 5.4 billion euros and a cut in health spending of 572 million euros. Already last year, this country had the 2nd highest density of police officers per capita in the EU and the fewest nurses.¹

die erste Woche Athen

——–

———– in english ———–
We have been in Athens since one week and we are now officially allowed to leave the apartment. We have applied for a health certificate and we have received our 2nd negative Corona test.
We used the last week to get a picture of the situation on the ground and contacted many projects that are happy to receive support. Our first contact point, Khora, will be receiving in the next weeks almost 1000 pieces of organic soap from the self-managed soap factory Vio Me in Thessaloniki, thanks to your help.
We have already signed ourselves up for shifts at the Free-Shop as well as on in the Khora kitchen (today and tomorrow we will get the introductory talk and have made new connections, such as the kitchen of Oallosanthropos).
Contrary to our expectations, we have the impression that the situation of the streets is fairly relaxed. Many refugees, whose asylum procedure has been completed and who still had to live in the streets, have been brought from or to camps in the city,
where they are allowed to camp, but otherwise have no official access to supplies.
Among other things, the NGO Project Elea provides them with basic food and daily necessities and provides them with a DIY kitchen.
In addition, the solidarity among the residents is also great, so that allocated goods are shared. We have also contacted Project Elea, located in the Eleonas Inner Athens camp, for support. However, the procedure
for registering as official volunteers in a state camp still scares us a bit.
The variety and number of solidarity kitchens and structures is overwhelming but it also shows how great the need is. Only at the end of January, a German Higher Administrative Court ruled that deportations to
Greece are inadmissible, even if the person concerned has already received asylum there, because the social and economic situation in the country is unreasonable. *
Yesterday we also started our first own action and baked 600 vegan chocolate cookies, which we distributed today at the kitchen of the Antifa soccer club Asteras in Exarchia, which has existed for 3 weeks.

One of our side projects is also a radio feature on solidarity and self-managed refugee solidarity structures in Athens.

Projekt 2021

In Dieser Einrichtung leben circa 400 Menschen in ehemaligen Büroräumlichkeiten.

VAIOGHORI

Vaioghori is a camp 30 km outside of Thessaloniki, far away of any infrastucture a city has, like school, kindergarden, work and possibility for cheap food, clothes or other things.
This was sadly due to Covid 19 our last stop. We built up the tent but we could just do cinema and workshops(screenprinting and bookbinding) once.

After that we were forced by government and Covid 19 to stop our actions there. But we left a big amount of all our donations in form of clothes, tools like sewingmachine, welding machine, screwdriver and some handtools there. At this point BIG THANKS to all people who donated.

DIAWATA-Thessaloniki

In coooperation with ARSIS we made stencil.-, screenprinting.-, bookbinding.- and welding workshops with unaccompanied minors in the refugee camp of Diawata.

update about our current situation

First of all, we are sorry that we did not publish anything since weeks.

After Serres we have also been to Sindos, Diawata, Samos and Vaioghori.
We try to continue reporting these issues the following week.

The last spot where we put up the tent was Vaioghori. Sadly, we just could make cinema and workhops once before we were forced to put down the tent due to the coronna crisis.

After that, the bigger part of our crew was travelling home during the last to weeks.
We had a forced stay in romania due the closed borders of hungary.
After a lot of telefon calls and organizing stuff the german embassy in timisoara put us on a list, which made it possible to pass hungary yesterday. We could pass without leaving the highway. By now all people of „bigger part of the crew“ should be in their homecountries.

BUT there is still a small part of our group in greece, who was/is not able to cross any border, 2 days after the first group left greece.

WE KEEP YOU UPDATED
